Adept Play
Independent publishing means that the creator owns the work, both for IP (intellectual property) and especially for executive control over its content, how it is presented, and how it is made available. “Creator” may refer to more than one person but rarely more than very few. The term does not refer to any specific type of game nor to any hobby community.
That’s a terrible post title. Someone should have stopped me. Anyway, we are in fact seven years exactly into Adept Play, dated from its initial registration as a Swedish business. A tiny one to be sure, but at least as viable as a lemonade stand. What good has it done? What has been accomplished? What…
Here’s the beast: all the things I think we should collectively consider as the social and commercial platform for role-playing’s history … and content, and emotions. Distribution, political context, money matters, subcultural effects, and more: presented not as momentary justifications, but as a layered history with a deep structure of cause and effect. Many thanks…
Erik Steiner is a PhD candidate at York University, studying the economics and marketing of role-playing. He’s apparently talked to a lot of people and eventually came around to me. Before you understandably anticipate a disaster, I’ll tell you the payoff: a great conversation and opportunity to articulate important ideas. Because, at his invitation, I…
After 2.5 years of development, Im Reich der Nibelungen is finished & available at DriveThruRPG in German — and French (core book only), courtesy of Greg! Ron’s greenlit a link, so here it is: Im Reich der Nibelungen | DriveThruRPG No promotion (e.g. no pitch or blurb), as befits this place, but some information and…
I’m getting closer to publishing my game, In the Realm of the Nibelungs, so here’s my current thinking on pricing and marketing (phrased for, though not yet published on the game’s blog): Pricing My game’s [planned] price is €6,50. You’ll get five documents (S&WCL, Im Reich der Nibelungen, the optional booklet Rheingold, a GM Screen,…
Remember all those interviews a couple of months ago! This was another in the same time-batch, and believe me, especially since the Thirteenth Floor interview from the previous year was released then as well, I was getting very boggled about who asked what and what I’d said in each. With any luck, you can forgive…
I don’t know if it has anything to do with Adept Play as such, but I’ve been receiving a steady arrival of interview requests for a while – even or mostly, for some reason, from people I don’t know even a little. I like it, mysterious as its cause may be. Across all these interviews…
A lot of interviews showed up recently. For this one, I was contacted by Nune, who is studying entrepeneurship in Rotterdam. (rhymes with “rune,” one syllable) His questions included what does it mean to be a role-playing publisher, what do you have to contend with, what should you consider, and especially, the term he used,…
