Adept Play
Independent publishing means that the creator owns the work, both for IP (intellectual property) and especially for executive control over its content, how it is presented, and how it is made available. “Creator” may refer to more than one person but rarely more than very few. The term does not refer to any specific type of game nor to any hobby community.
Remember all those interviews a couple of months ago! This was another in the same time-batch, and believe me, especially since the Thirteenth Floor interview from the previous year was released then as well, I was getting very boggled about who asked what and what I’d said in each. With any luck, you can forgive…
I don’t know if it has anything to do with Adept Play as such, but I’ve been receiving a steady arrival of interview requests for a while – even or mostly, for some reason, from people I don’t know even a little. I like it, mysterious as its cause may be. Across all these interviews…
A lot of interviews showed up recently. For this one, I was contacted by Nune, who is studying entrepeneurship in Rotterdam. (rhymes with “rune,” one syllable) His questions included what does it mean to be a role-playing publisher, what do you have to contend with, what should you consider, and especially, the term he used,…
Here’s one of those days when I feel like “it” (and what other “it” could I be talking about) was worth it. When people actually play and actually design, and put some thought into what others may have thought or done. When they care more about those things than about new hotness or hordes of…
Follow-up to this post, June 30, 2020 I am fully OK with politics as a topic and as a context for other topics, right out here, in front of everyone. Today it matters for this post. First, the details include that Edward James Bluddworth contacted me for an interview, as anyone can do, as invited…
Fabien Hildwein is one of the enthusiastic participants in the francophone sector of role-playing discourse and design. The thread back to me is probably Christoph Boeckle, who dropped a lot of time and buckets of posts at the Forge, and at some point along the way prompted a similar site (SilentDrift) and scene among French…
Megan Bennett-Burks and I toss some topics back and forth mainly because we both grapple with them. You’ll probably recognize my beefs with crowdfunding, or rather, how it happened to turn out in practice, despite my support for the basic idea; also, my ongoing effort to distinguish between text as teaching vs. reference vs. user…
It’s ridiculous how many games I cart around with me, matched only by how obscure or short-lived or forgotten many of them are. I feel like flashing a little sign or card that says “Yes, you never heard of it,” just to get past the litany of announcements to that effect when I produce one…
This interview is from November 2017, almost exactly a year later than the Metatopia interview with Maksim Mohammedov, and a good comparison with it. You’ll see how both Vigil and Adept Play have emerged from the earlier points.
