Adept Play
Twosie play means that two people are playing. It might be a game designed for more people but only two happen to be playing, or it might be a game specialized for two players only. Fun fact: until 2008, I didn’t think good two-player roleplaying design was possible – but changed my mind entirely due to experiences in play.
I have been experiencing something pretty great in play lately, across two games. I want to talk about it. The Play I’m playing in a one-on-one Burning Wheel game. I’m not GMing. The GM was inspired by the Morrowind video game (which I’m unfamiliar with), and we have a political-religious war going on where the…
Restarting GM-ing My child, Tabitha, expressed an interest in gaming after having gone to the Phantasm convention in Peterborough, Ontario. She played in a Bushido game I ran, and in a Mouse Guard game run by anyone else. She was leafing through the Monster Burner supplement to Burning Wheel and saw the really cool images…
At a Con in July (Conchiusa), Alessio and I had a chance to get together in person in Bologna. There were several nice or otherwise thought-provoking gaming experiences-and to which I will return one day little by little, when I am more energetic-but in this case I would like to talk about a Cold Soldier…
Sam and me just finished a game of The Hour of Dog and Wolf and reflected on our experience. This is a discussion about the themes/shared experiences, and the use of plot points. Sam played Angelo Scabo, a disorganized killer with visions of Saint Barbara in the small ex-industrial town of Charleroi, in Belgium. It…
Hi (be kind with my use of words, I’m not a native speaker)I played a game session online with a friend. The material setup was a Miro board and a vocal in a Discord server. Being just two, it was easy to adjust the game to our tastes, that we knew well, and the rules…
I generally play D&D (O or A 1e, if you’re curious), mostly focusing on creating and overcoming challenges for myself and other players. But after spending a few weeks watching lots of vampire movies, I thought I might play a game that would help me explore characters, situations, and emotions common to the genre. I…
Art by Jennell Jaquays from The Legendary Duck Tower Over the weekend, my spouse (Adrean) and I had some free-time, and we played a one-off of Hero Wars. I already had a character made, a beer drinking Humakti Duck, and Adrean was down to play as Duncan McQuack, Initiate of Humakt. I sat back and…
Lately, I’ve been reevaluating role-playing games a lot for two players after trying out S\lay W\Me. This time it’s Mars Colony by Tim C. Koppang. I played two games, once as the Governor and once as the Savior. I’ll report the first one here, which I consider one of the best games I’ve played this…
Rod and I played our first session of Champions Now this week, drawing on our favorite chunks of D&D media, and the roleplaying setting of Karameikos in particular, for our inspiration. Rod’s playing lots of NPCs, not the least of which is the city of Specularum itself. I’m playing Suleiman (Sully to his friends), a…
