Adept Play
Twosie play means that two people are playing. It might be a game designed for more people but only two happen to be playing, or it might be a game specialized for two players only. Fun fact: until 2008, I didn’t think good two-player roleplaying design was possible – but changed my mind entirely due to experiences in play.
Last week I went on a date with L, a person I met online. They asked me out after an online conversation about rpgs. We planned on both meeting up as a pair and creating a group to play Monsterhearts, but found a lot of logistical difficulties and eventually gave up. We were only able…
My buddy Thomas (who blogs at Augury Ignored) and I played four sessions of Runecairn. We’re playing online, and we’ve previously played Burning Wheel and a single session each of S/Lay w/Me and Cold Soldier. Runecairn is a two-player Norse fantasy game set after Ragnarok. It is inspired by the videogame Dark Souls, of which…
The game is on permanent hiatus. Tab started school and plays with the local D&D club. Those rules are more her speed and she was not really into learning all BW’s intricacies. Otlet put in a lot of effort to overcome the caution of the dwellers in the great forest. Tab wanted to do a…
Otlet Sets Out This was the first Burning Wheel adventure in the 1-on-1 game I posted about earlier. The starting situation was Otlet in his leaky shack looking Northward, the metropolis of Freeport to the West and the ancient forest to the East. His Roden were the embittered dwellers Below the metropolis, and he had…
So I tried Cold Soldier (literally ice cold) together with Kristoffer under the tutelage of Ron this weekend; only an introduction really as we didn’t play a full game. Kristoffer chose a Vengeful god for the Dark Master. Neither of us had played the game before. I had read the rules as laid out by…
After I mentioned wanting to try new types of games, Claudio offered to play with me. Our options were Tales of the Round Table, Cold Soldier, and S/lay w/Me. I initially asked to play Round Table because of its explicitly introductory quality, but we decided it’d be easier to play a two person game. Of…
I have been experiencing something pretty great in play lately, across two games. I want to talk about it. The Play I’m playing in a one-on-one Burning Wheel game. I’m not GMing. The GM was inspired by the Morrowind video game (which I’m unfamiliar with), and we have a political-religious war going on where the…
Restarting GM-ing My child, Tabitha, expressed an interest in gaming after having gone to the Phantasm convention in Peterborough, Ontario. She played in a Bushido game I ran, and in a Mouse Guard game run by anyone else. She was leafing through the Monster Burner supplement to Burning Wheel and saw the really cool images…
Sam and me just finished a game of The Hour of Dog and Wolf and reflected on our experience. This is a discussion about the themes/shared experiences, and the use of plot points. Sam played Angelo Scabo, a disorganized killer with visions of Saint Barbara in the small ex-industrial town of Charleroi, in Belgium. It…
