Adept Play
The term refers to the available, actionable scope of play during the course of a roleplaying experience. It may be composed of different locations or times, or concepts, and it is always composed of scenes (where someone is, what is happening) as subunits.
This is a self-reflective post is about referring reincorporation and situation in play, and two mechanics of the game: the nameless conversation, getting a name and how all of those variables intersect together. For that reason, I’ll avoid any talk about prep in the article. What I want to celebrate, is what I see as…
At the end of February, I ran a game for Games on Demand Online I call Mustering Out Blues. It’s a Traveller hack that came from a couple-three different places: (1) the classic Traveller campaign I started at the height of the pandemic that evolved into Galactic Adventures, the game I described in a previous…
This is the second adventure in the “big group” Tunnels & Trolls game, which acquired another player along the way for a total of five in addition to me. For the two additions, this was their first role-playing experience, so certain points and topics about new players apply. Although I don’t have much to add…
The classic Traveller game I started on Roll20 during the height of the pandemic morphed by degrees into something different, a kind of counter-Traveller, a funhouse-mirror Traveller that takes as its point of departure the same basic premise–you’ve spent your life so far in service to some galactic guild or other, gotten yourself to the…

The post Or we’ll sic the fairy on you is primarily about another T&T game, played with a larger group, which continued into a notable second adventure which I’ll post about as well. In the video there, I mentioned some events…

There seems to be an unending stream of games that assume the players are a team that runs missions. Sometimes the characters are presumed to be freelancers who take on contract work and other times they have some kind of formal employment or indentured servitude or shared cause arrangement with an individual or organization. Either…
I’ve been hit by a roleplaying memory from a few years ago while discussing Blades in the Dark with an acquaintance. I was playing Scum and Villainy, which is a space-opera/western themed game based on Blades in the Dark. The two games are, rule-by-rule, extremely similar, but that doesn’t make them the same game. Also, this…
My first playtest for Im Reich der Nibelungen has seen seven sessions so far (and three casualties plus a TPK — more on that in a minute –, so I am happy). Some of the game’s mechanics put time pressure on the players: (a) At the end of every session, the (titular) magical mists envelop…
