Adept Play
“Authorities” is my term for how people say things which are honored by others in play. Using an authority often means including some constraining factor such as a dice roll. Authorities are organized very differently system by system, and often group by group.
So this post relates to two things that we’ve been discussing here recently. One is the discussion I had with Lorenzo in his post about using random personality traits in his game (here). Another is this comment from Ron in a previous Hantverksklubben discussion (here): Sooner or later, with an eye toward actual concepts and…

I HAVE A CONFESSION! … I’m Sometimes a Bit of a Troll The Covid lockdown has allowed me to do a lot of navel-gazing and self-reflection as a human. Keeping this game related allowed me to look at my habits as a player versus my habits as a game master. I realize I’m not a…

Again we barely managed to get enough people to run a session of Hantverksklubben yesterday, but that’s ok! Three people joining is pretty standard by now. As usual, the original play report is in Swedish and can be found at rollspel.nu here. This will be a slightly polished Google translation, so if you can read…

So yesterday we had another session of Hantverksklubben, and I already wrote a play report on rollspel.nu, where all our play reports are stored. But since we’ve now had some discussion about our activities on Adept Play, and since Helma joined us for this session, let’s post it here as well. This was session 19…

If you were following the development of Champions Now a while ago, you may remember the memorable game played at the Gauntlet which I adapted into the examples in the game text (Values and family, not necessarily family values). Pawel played Grimfire in that session, and a lot of his input found its way into…

I’ve run into a few conversational speedbumps lately, nothing adversarial, which nevertheless put me in an adversarial frame of mind. That’s due to history: having been mis-characterized as a “rules as written” advocate, for example; having taken the high road regarding such terms as “old school” as if it were a thing, and seeing my…
The (mostly) same crew who were playing Carbon 2185 were interested in Forbidden Lands. So we have moved onto that, which is great because I enjoy playing this game. For those not familiar, it is a grim Fantasy setting that uses a modified form of the Year Zero Engine for sword & sorcery style play.…
Recently I’ve been playing some more Dungeon World, this time as a player, kind of coaching an unexperienced GM through the game (it unfortunately requires this, due to the numerous unclarified rules). We’re at our fifth session and we’ve started to really hit it off a couple of sessions ago. Me and the GM often…
The stars aligned and I found myself with willing participants to play Ribbon Drive, by Avery Alder. Here’s the publisher’s page about the game, and the embedded video is my musings from a couple of months ago about wanting to play it, and why. It’s a single-session game intended to go three to five hours,…
